Lon Fuller, a law professor at Harvard, found that assertion infuriating. He paced “back and forth at the back of the lecture hall like a hungry lion,” a colleague recalled, and he left during the question-and-answer session afterward, unable to bear any more. The position that Fuller staked out for himself on the jurisprudential spectrum was at least politically astute.

Fuller completed both his A.B. and J.D. degrees at Stanford in 1924 and 1926. He took his first teaching position as an assistant professor of law at the University of Oregon in 1926.
